Eiichiro Oda, Creator of One Piece, Almost Altered Portgas D. Ace’s destiny

Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, said that he had second thoughts about Portgas D. Ace’s destiny.

Oda revealed information about Monkey D. Luffy’s brother’s amazing reaction in a 2012 interview, newly translated in part by X (previously Twitter) user @/sandman_AP. “When Ace first appeared, the reaction from my audience was tremendous,” he remarked. “So I was debating whether or not to murder Ace. I intended to murder him within a year of his emergence, but it took ten years.” Oda’s remarks may be found in One Piece Magazine, Vol.3.

Although the huge fan reaction to Ace didn’t stop Oda from killing him, it seems to have postponed the inevitable by a decade. Ace’s death remains one of the most momentous moments in One Piece history, especially given that, aside from tragic flashbacks, major character deaths are rare in the franchise’s reality. Because it happened to Luffy’s brother, the sorrowful occasion had an even greater impact.

Ace’s death was also an eye-opening experience for Luffy. In the “Sabaody Archipelago” storyline, the Straw Hat commander was forcefully separated from his crew by Bartholomew Kuma not long ago. Luffy realized he wasn’t strong enough to continue deeper into the New World after failing to defend his friends and brother. As a result, he made the difficult but necessary choice to have everyone train separately and then reunite two years later.

Despite its 26-year existence, the One Piece franchise continues to win new admirers throughout the world. Netflix’s surprisingly well-received live-action version has expanded the audience for newcomers while reminding longstanding fans of why they fell in love with One Piece in the first place.

The highly anticipated anime adaptation of Gear 5 Luffy broke the internet, and while Luffy’s appearance in the 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade didn’t go as smoothly as everyone hoped, it was still inspiring to see one of Japan’s most beloved animated characters represented in a major Western tradition.

While the One Piece book is nearing the end of its tale, the anime is still thrilling viewers as it approaches the “Egghead” chapter. Season 2 of the live-action One Piece series is also in the works at Netflix.
