“Beyond the Wall” is a great way for fans of the venerable Attack on Titan series to start the new year. Just in time for the holidays.
The “Beyond the Wall” series, which includes four distinctive bottles from the Japanese sake brand Daina of the Kikunosato Brewing Company, is being sold by sake reseller Tippsy Sake. Each bottle is made to represent a different Attack on Titan character. “Made for a hero,” the Eren is described as having a “rich flavor as pure and straightforward as Eren’s heart”—a flavor that is perhaps up for discussion. Developed for sipping, the Mikasa is rated as “At the top of its game” after being matured for 13 years.
The Levi is crafted from “the king of sake rice, Yamadanishiki, and delivers a rich, complex flavor befitting Captain Levi’s reputation and status.” It is marketed as “fit for a captain.” Last but not least, The Pure Titan is a “take on the titans,” and, like the “unique personalities of the Pure Titans, the aftertaste leaves a variety of unique flavors.”
The Levi costs $65, while the bottles from Eren, Mikasa, and Pure Titan cost $60 apiece. There is also a $240 “Beyond the Wall” collector’s set that includes all four bottles. Personalized packaging and original character artwork are also included with every bottle.
The collection’s parent company, Tippsy Sake, was established in Los Angeles by Genki Ito and is a specialty and subscription-based sake retailer that sources sake directly from Japan.
According to Ito, the firm was founded with the goal of bringing about a day when Americans might “enjoy sake in ordinary dinner settings, just like they would wine.”
The Attack on Titan collection is one of Tippsy Sake’s best-selling items, demonstrating both the popularity of the show and its enduring influence in the wake of the anime’s shocking climax.
Since the Heian period (794 AD), drinking toso, or o-toso, sake—spiced sake—as part of the Japanese New Year’s custom is still observed throughout most of the country. The sake is served warm and steeped in medicinal spices in red lacquer toso sets.
Its purpose is to fend off any ailments from the previous year and grant the drinker a long life. Toso is easily manufactured at home, but Tippsy Sake has the Attack on Titan “Beyond the Wall” collection and a few additional spicy sake selections.
